Earth Day 2017: Environmental & Climate Literacy

Earth Day: April 22nd

Earth Day 2017 falls on the same date every year. For the past 45 years April 22nd commemorates the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, a day dedicated to public consciousness about air and water pollution was born. A symbolic day driven by hopes to force issues of environmental protection onto the U.S. national political agenda.

Earth Day 2017: Environmental & Climate Literacy

The tremendous efforts of the first Earth Day resulted in the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. In honor of this milestone, Earth Day Network is launching an ambitious set of goals to shape the future of 21st century environmentalism.” (earth day.org)

The theme for Earth Day 2016 was Trees for the Earth. On the date an ambitious goal was set. Plant one tree for every person on the planet, a total of 7.8 billion trees, by Earth Day 2020.

Earth Day 2017: Environmental & Climate Literacy

April 22nd, 2017 is dedicated to launching a 3 year commitment to ensure that every student graduates high school as an environmental and climate literate citizen. This commitment is part of the Earth Day Network’s campaign launch for global environmental and climate literacy by Earth Day 2020. As the effects of climate change are a global issue, global education is the key to change.

Earth Day 2017: Environmental & Climate Literacy

The Earth Day Network aims to get as much support as possible while teaming up with a large collaborative network of nonprofits, government organizations and business leaders.

Education is the foundation for progress. We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet. We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection.(https://www.earthday.org/earthday/)

You can participate this year by gathering your school or community together for a Teach-In literacy program offered by the Earth Day Network or any other environmental education program near you.
