2017 is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
Ceningan Resort and Ceningan Divers are committed develop and maintain Sustainable Tourism practices. This has been apparent through our various initiatives since our opening in 2015. That it be through our educational programs with our guests and divers, or our ongoing effort to make our resort facilities 100% eco and sustainable.
We aim to work closely with the local community, other businesses, our team and guests to ensure that our footprint on this small 7 square kilometres island has as little impact on the environment, the community and its future generations.
Whenever possible, we choose environmentally-friendly solutions. We buy from local suppliers and producers. We promote the 3 Rs principles “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle”.
We are a lifetime member of The International Ecotourism Society. We follow the Principle of Ecotourism as part of our mission and business plan.
In 2015, we completely eliminated the use of plastic at our resort for single serving items such as water bottles, toiletry kits, or straws for drinks. Our guests have access to our “free flow” water station and can refill their reusable water bottles free of charge. In November 2016, we completely redesign our bio septic system to better manage the human waste and reduce water usage at our resort. We perform a complete maintenance of our systems, bungalows and redid all of our roofs and added new energy saving materiel to help reduce our electricity consumption and impact on the local power grid.
Throughout 2017, we will host a series of events, educational programs, as well as special offers for our guests. Our aim is to promote eco-friendly, sustainable solutions, conduct reef and dive site clean ups, or local cleanups with the school and community to help keep the island beautiful. Each month we will post new information, tricks, tools and update on our sustainable projects and programs.
THINK Globally ACT locally!
Our 2017 Sustainability Project is to create a recycling program and facilities for Nusa Ceningan. We are currently in the process of working with other local businesses and the community to establish a garbage and recycling collection system for the island. We hope to have an action plan in place by the end of the 1st quarter of 2017 with an operating facility by the end of the second quarter.
We will post more on this project later in February.
In the words of Margaret Mead. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
2017 is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
12 months to celebrate and promote the contribution of the tourism sector to building a better world. This is the major goal of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 that will start in a few days.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development recalling the potential of tourism to advance the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behaviour towards a more sustainable tourism sector than can contribute effectively to the SDGs.
“This is a unique opportunity to build a more responsible and committed tourism sector that can capitalize its immense potential in terms of economic prosperity, social inclusion, peace and understanding, cultural and environmental preservation” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.
Accounting for 7% of worldwide exports, one in eleven jobs and 10% of the world’s GDP, the tourism sector if well managed can foster inclusive economic growth, social inclusiveness and the protection of cultural and natural assets.
The International Year will promote tourism’s role in the following five key areas:
*We will update you at the end of January on how we hope to address each of the 5 key areas in our 2017 action plan.*
The presentation of the International Year will take place in Madrid on 18 January 2017 on the occasion of the Spanish Tourism Fair, FITUR.
UNWTO invites all partners to join the celebrations by sharing their activities and initiatives to advance sustainable tourism for development at www.tourism4development2017.org
The Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will stimulate action over the next fifteen years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet:
We are determined to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment.
We are determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations.
We are determined to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature.
We are determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.
We are determined to mobilize the means required to implement this Agenda through a revitalised Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focussed in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people.
The interlinkages and integrated nature of the Sustainable Development Goals are of crucial importance in ensuring that the purpose of the new Agenda is realised. If we realize our ambitions across the full extent of the Agenda, the lives of all will be profoundly improved and our world will be transformed for the better.

Ceningan Eco Resort
When we took over the Jetty Resort earlier this year, we drafted our business and action plans. As part of our commitment, our operation will follow eco-friendly practices and promote awareness through educational programs. We also want to limit our impact on our community and Ceningan island.
With that in mind, we are renovating our facilities. We are adding a water collection system on our main building. We dug a new well, installed seveal water reservoirs to ensure that our capacity and consumption does not impact the local community. We are installing new energy saving appliances; AC units, fans, light bulbs, and low volume shower heads in our bungalows to reduce our energy and water consumption.
While we are doing these renovations, we are doing our best to use local materials and suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint. We are using organic material whenever possible, and we are installing bioseptic tanks to process the grey water from the showers, sinks and toilets of our resort’s 8 bungalows and restaurant facilities.
As a PADI 5 Start Dive Resort we will also dedicate a good part of energy in promoting Project AWARE educational programs, actions, and participate in fundraising innitiatives.
